This is the first of my books to be self-published, but definitely not the last. The process adds more work to my busy schedule, but it’s not without some satisfaction.
Philip Golabuk or GRFKDSGN.com designed the cover to the specifications at CreateSpace. What you see here is just the front. He also created the artwork for the spine and back cover.
Usually, I write and edit my books in Microsoft Word and I did, for this manuscript. However, to make it book ready (not eBook), I ported the Word file to Adobe InDesign where I the did layout, inserting blank pages where necessary, added a graphic at the top of each chapter and made certain the type flowed smoothly. This is different from an eBook. When publishing electronically, the book is one long stream, maybe with a break for a new chapter, but the eBook does not have headers or footers (top, repeating elements, such as the author’s name, book title and, in my book, the page numbers).
After getting the cover ready and doing final edits on the text, I uploaded Sex, Love and Happiness to CreateSpace and ordered two proof copies. My wife and I each took one and marked any errors on the book pages. This required two final sweeps through the InDesign file and now the book is done. I do need to take these edited proof copies and use them to make corrections for the eBook, which will come soon.
Next, I’m on to do the same for Moving Forward.
